Chiefs fall in final seconds

Published: Monday, October 27, 2008 1:24 PM CDT
OSKALOOSA - The Keokuk Chiefs experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows in the final 47 seconds of the final football game of the season Friday.

Keokuk took a 22-21 lead when Steven Ingratta kicked a 22-yard field goal with 47 seconds remaining, but Oskaloosa returned the favor when Andrew Reed connected on a 27-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Indians a 24-22 win in the Class 3A District 5 game at Oskaloosa Stadium.

The win allowed Oskaloosa, 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the district, to clinch the final playoff spot in the district. The Indians play at Pella Wednesday. Pella defeated Oskaloosa 35-30 in the second week of the season.

Keokuk finishes its season 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the district.

Oskaloosa took a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter when quarterback Jon Eveland completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Wiebe Goodyk, but the Chiefs battled back.

Keokuk answered with a touchdown just before the end of the quarter. Aaron Zetterlund had a 27-yard run to the Oskaloosa six-yard line, and the senior running back scored two plays later on a five-yard run to complete a six-play, 50-yard drive. The Chiefs trailed 21-13 after the extra point was missed.

The Chiefs scored again on their next possession. Matt Meyers kept the drive alive with a two-yard run on third-and-two, and Elliott Vandenberg hit Julius Hurt with a 20-yard pass completion. Another 15 yards was tacked on after an Oskaloosa unsportsmanlike penalty call, and Keokuk had a first down at the Indians 30-yard line.

Zetterlund ran up the middle for 26 yards and two plays later he scored his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard run with 4:55 remaining. Keokuk went for the two-point conversion to tie the game, but Oskaloosa stopped Vandenberg to keep the score 21-19.

Keokuk's defense came up big again on Oskaloosa's next possession, and the Indians were forced to punt from its own 38. The Chiefs caught a huge break when the snap sailed over the head of punter Matt Bowie. Keokuk took over on downs after the 19-yard loss, giving the Chiefs a first down at the Oskaloosa 19 with 2:27 remaining.

Zetterlund had runs of four and 10 yards to move the ball to the four-yard line. The Chiefs got as close as the two, but Oskaloosa stopped Vandenberg for a three-yard loss on third down. Keokuk decided to kick the field goal, and Ingratta, in his first field goal attempt this season, connected on the 22-yard attempt to give the Chiefs their first lead since the second quarter.

Unfortunately, Keokuk didn't get a chance to celebrate long. Eveland completed a seven-yard pass to Goodyk on fourth-and-six to keep the drive alive. Eveland then found Bowie for a 26-yard completion to give the Indians another first down at the Keokuk 22, and a pass interference call on the Chiefs allowed Oskaloosa to set up for a game-winning field goal attempt.

Reed, who kicked a 38-yard field goal earlier in the season, hit from 27 yards to give the Indians the lead and the win.

Zetterlund ran for 105 yards on 16 carries to lead the Chiefs. He finished the season with 1,185 yards and 11 touchdowns on 202 carries.

Meyers added 77 yards on 18 carries. He finished the season with 509 yards rushing.

Vandenberg ran for 45 yards and completed 4-of-9 passes for 83 yards. Meyers had two receptions for 42 yards. Zetterlund had a 21-yard reception, and Hurt had a catch for 20 yards.

Kris Hopkins led the defense with 15 tackles. Zac Asbury added 11 tackles, and Matt Kelly had 10 tackles, including four for a loss.

Eveland was 14-of-28 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Goodyk had six receptions for 89 yards, while Reed had five catches for 63 yards.

Oskaloosa was held to 42 yards rushing on 36 attempts. Austin Blanchard led the Indians with 49 yards on nine carries.
