Hancock County faces constitutional convention question

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ill. - Hancock County, Ill., voters will decide if a state constitutional convention should be called as well as choose candidates at the federal, state and local level on Election Day Tuesday.
The last state constitutional convention was held in 1969-70. In 1988, 75 percent of the voters statewide rejected the call for a convention.
Illinois' own Sen. Barack Obama is poised at making history by becoming the first African-American to be elected president. In addition to Republican challenger John McCain, other presidential candidates on the ballot are Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party; Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party; John Polachek, new; Charles Baldwin, Constitution Party of Illinois; Ralph Nader, independent.
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Steve Sauerberg. U.S. Rep. Phil Hare, a Democratic, has no opposition for the 17th District seat in the U.S. House.
At the state level, incumbent state Sen. John Sullivan, a Democrat, is unopposed in the 47th District, which includes Hancock County. Democrat Earl Godt II is challenging incumbent state Rep. Rich Myers, a Republican, in the 94th District in the Illinois House.
At the county level, Republican Circuit Clerk John Neally, Republican State's Attorney Jim Drozdz and Republican Coroner Kendall Beals have no opposition Tuesday.
There are no races for Hancock County Board seats either. The candidates are Republican William Crabill in District 2, Republican Thomas Scheetz in District 1, Republican Cary Gray in District 4, Republican David Walker in District 5 and Democrat Harold Stuckwisch in District 3.
Circuit Judge David Vancil and Circuit Judge James Stewart are seeking retention. Retention to another six-year term requires a yes vote of 60 percent or more.
Circuit Judge Paul Mangieri was appointed to a vacacny on the bench. Mangieri and James Standard are vying for the initial six-year term following the vacancy.
Carthage Park District voters will vote on a proposition to reduce the size of the park board from seven to five members. A simple majority of votes cast will decide the referendum.
Polls will remain open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

" I might have missed it, but I heard rumors of a mayoral race in Hamilton. Who is this challenger to the incumbent, Woodruff? Am I wrong, did I mishear something? I've looked everywhere and don't know a thing about this other person (if (s)he even exists), so I can't very well make an informed decision tomorrow!!!! "
