Keokuk qualifies swimmers for state

IOWA CITY - The Keokuk Chiefs qualified for the state meet in four events during Saturday's Iowa City West Regional.

Alicia Logan and Nicki McDowell posted times fast enough in individual events at the regional to advance to the state meet Saturday in Marshalltown. Logan qualified in two events, while McDowell advanced in one event.

McDowell had the best finish for Keokuk at the regional. The junior placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.91.

Cedar Rapids Washington's Sami Puk won the event with a time of 1:02.08, while Iowa City High's Beth Eyanson was second with a time of 1:02.24.

McDowell's time is 14th among the 24 swimmers who qualified from the six regionals Saturday.

Logan had a pair of sixth-place finishes. She finished with a time of 25.60 in the 50-yard freestyle and had a time of 55.72 in the 100-yard freestyle.


Tipton's took the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Alicia Goetz won the event with a time of 25.31, while sophomore Mackenzie Moritz was second in 25.34.

Cedar Rapids Washington's Emily Kopec won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.84.

Logan's times ranked 18th in the 50-yard freestyle and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle.

Keokuk also qualified a relay team.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Beckah Swan, McDowell, Fuller and Logan placed sixth with a time of 1:45.60. That times ranks 21 of the 24 teams that qualified.

Keokuk finished seventh among the 10 teams competing.

Linn-Mar won the regional title with 379 points. Cedar Rapids Washington was second with 331 points, and Muscatine took third with 324 points. Keokuk scored 132 points.

McDowell, Andi Queisner, Fuller and Chelsea Kies were sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:01.87.

Swan finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.86 and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:43.88, and Queisner was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.37.
