SCC overcomes injury to starter to post convincing win

It took a while, but the Southeastern Community College women's basketball team adjusted without its starting point guard during Saturday's contest.
Gabbie Binion, who led SCC with 14.5 points and 9.5 assists coming into the game, went down with a knee injury with 7:58 remaining in the first half and did not return.
Forest Park took advantage, cutting a 13-point deficit to three during a four minute span, but the BlackHawks built the lead back to seven at halftime and pulled away in the second half. SCC improved to 2-1 on the season with a 75-50 win.
“The bottom line is we won a basketball game and the kids did a great job,” said SCC Head Coach Jerry Jerome. “We got off to a good start at the first part, and we started to make a move until Gabbie bruised her knee a little bit. The five minutes after that was kind of hectic, but in the second half the four guards came in and did a real nice job of running us. We got the ball inside and hit some shots from the perimeter.”
The game was tied at six when Binion and Lindsey Jameson hit back-to-back three-pointers to start a 12-0 run for SCC. Alicea Mason added a basket in transition, Alexys Hatcher connected on two free throws, and Brittany Brown scored inside to make the score 18-6.
The score was 24-11 when Binion came up with a steal. She was fouled going up for a lay-up and injured her right knee.
“Hopefully, it is just a bruise and we'll be able to get her back on Wednesday because we play Illinois Central, the No. 3 team (in NJCAA Division II),” Jerome said.
Andrea Jones banked in a three-pointer to start a 12-2 run for Forest Park. The score was 26-23 when Mason scored inside on a pass from Brittany Brown. Brown added a free throw and a basket, and Mason scored on a three-point play to expand the lead back to nine just before halftime.
The lead remained nine until SCC went on a quick 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Forest Park went to a zone defense that was ineffective against the BlackHawks. Jameson hit back-to-back three-pointers to put SCC on top 49-31.
“They went to a zone, and Lindsey shot them right out of it,” Jerome said. “They went back to man after that, but by then it was too late.”
The BlackHawks added another 8-0 run to stretch the lead even more. Mason made two free throws, and Kelsey Whitaker, Brown and Jameson each scored a basket to make the score 61-39.
“(Forest Park) got tired a little bit, and we were running seven kids in and out,” Jerome said. “We hit some shots, and when you make shots, runs like that happen.”
Jameson led SCC with 23 points and five assists. Mason added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Brown finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Whitaker added seven points and five rebounds for the BlackHawks. Binion had six points and four assists. Bebe Frost contributed six points and eight rebounds. Hatcher had four points, and Tiffany Williams finished with two points and three blocked shots.
“Our kids played hard all the way through,” Jerome said. “I thought all eight players contributed in some way or another.”
Rana Boyd scored 22 points to lead Forest Park, 0-2 on the season. Andrea Jones finished with nine points.
