Illini West downs Macomb in football playoffs
CARTHAGE, Ill. - The Illini West Chargers outscored Macomb 46-0 over the final 24:33 for a 66-14 win over the Macomb Bombers in the Illinois Class 3A second round playoffs Saturday.
Illini West hosts Aledo-Westmer in the 3A quarterfinals. The Green Dragons advanced with a 30-22 win over Stillman Valley.
The two teams met week four of the regular season with Illini West handing Aledo-Westmer its only loss of the season. The Chargers scored a 36-22 victory at Fuzz Berges Field.
Macomb had pulled to within 20-14 Davis Hendrickson completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Gordy with 3:21 left in the second quarter to pull the Bombers to within 20-14, but Illini West answered just before halftime. Mitch Beals scored with 33 seconds left in the first half. He also scored the two-point conversion to put the Chargers on top 28-14.
Illini West put the game out of reach in the third quarter with three touchdowns.
Michael Lafferty scored on a four-yard run and added the two-point conversion to increase the margin to 36-14. Beals scored his second touchdown of the game on a nine yard run, and Drake Schmudlach added the two-point conversion for a 44-14 advantage. Schmudlach finished the scoring in the quarter with a 35-yard touchdown run, and Laffery kicked the extra point for a 51-14 lead.
Kris Vincent scored a defensive touchdown in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. He returned a fumble 31 yards, and Lafferty kicked the extra point to make the score 58-14. Avery LeJeune finished the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run with 5:22 remaining in the game. Ser Whitaker scored the two-point conversion for the final points.
Stefan Flynn ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries to lead Illini West. Beals added 80 yards on eight carries. Lafferty gained 54 yards on eight carries, and Schmudlach finished with 52 yards on eight carries. The Chargers did not attempt a pass in the game.
Kyle Hartzell led the defense with five solo and 11 total tackles. Derek Van Fleet added 10 tackles and two interceptions. Ross Hutson finished with seven tackles, and Andy Boyer and Vincent each recovered a fumble.
Hendrickson ran for 176 yards to lead Macomb.
