Crew dispels rape rumors

Unfounded rumors are frightening area residents and tying up investigative resources at the Keokuk Police Department, said Chief Tom Crew.
“We've had four to five calls in dispatch about people being randomly raped,” Crew said. “We have looked into all of this and there is no validity to the rumors.”
Three reports of sexual offenses, such as improper touching, sexual abuse and a teenage pregnancy, have been reported to the police in the past month, Crew said. The reports were investigated extensively and are not rapes.
“The Keokuk Police Department would let the community know if crimes like the ones being rumored actually happened,” Crew said.
Crew said the rumors have already filtered over to Hamilton, Ill.
The Daily Gate City recently posted a message on its story comment board asking people who believe a crime or a series of crimes have been committed and have not been reported in the paper, to e-mail or call the DGC.
“Do not simply post your unfounded accusations on this comment board,” the DGC posting said.
