Trikkes spotted in Montrose

MONTROSE - Late last summer, while watering flowers near the Hunold Heritage Center, Roger Chatfield noticed someone going past on a unusual looking conveyance. Since the driver was wearing a helmet,  it wasn't possible to tell who it was. On the way back, he was facing Chatfield, who then recognized him as Jeff Morgan.

Chatfield wondered if this was something Morgan had made in his shop, since he is a welder by trade.  Unbeknownst to Chatfield, the Trikke had arrived in Montrose.

As normally seems the situation, this vehicle has been gaining in popularity on each coast, but is just now making its appearance in the Midwest.

Jeff and Linda Morgan recognized the uniqueness of this vehicle and are now factory authorized dealers, doing business under the name Midwest Trikke.

So, just what is a Trikke?  It is a three-wheeled, human-powered vehicle developed in 2000 by Gildo Beleski, originally from Columbia, now of California.

Persons looking for performance would choose a Trikke manufactured from aircraft quality aluminum with its advantage of being light weight.

A second option would be to buy one made of steel, which is a less expensive.  Another cost variance is determined by the type of tires used, either pneumatic or polyurethane.

The Trikke also comes in 10 different models, chosen by a person's height, riding ability, and/or the surface it will be ridden on. Sizes are made to match everyone from a young child to an adult. This isn't a “one size fits all” machine.

No pushing or pedaling is required to make the Trikke go. You just place one foot on each pad, grasp the handlebars and begin to “rock and roll.” The process involves turning the handle bars in the same direction in which you are leaning.  This produces a skating motion which propels the vehicle.

With a little practice, Morgan has been able to reach a speed of 18.6 mph.  Hand brakes on the handle bars are an extra safety feature to aid in stopping the Trikke.

The three wheels add to the stability and ease of operation. With practice, even steep hills can be mastered.

A new model, the Tribred, comes with a dual speed electric motor. One can cruise along at the econo setting of 12 mph or hit the express setting with a max of 17 mph.

A single charge will power up to 12 miles, costing an average of less than 4 cents. Plugged into any 110 volt wall socket, the battery takes approximately 5 hours for a full recharge.

If downhill skiing is in your future, you may want to investigate the Skki model.

For storage, the Trikke can be folded up and hung on a garage wall. This also adds to the ease of transporting it in a vehicle to an area like a park or a bike trail. Being light weight makes it easy to carry and move around.

The Trikke can be ridden as a means of transportation at a casual pace, or it can be turned into a real exercise machine. Recently, a rider completed a cross country ride, going from California to Florida.

The Trikke can be legally ridden anywhere a bicycle can. Trikke riders range from ages 4 to 80-plus.

The Morgans are committed to working with each customer to assure satisfaction from the time of purchase through learning to ride the Trikke. They offer prospective customers the opportunity to try out, learn the basics and practice riding a Trikke.

The Morgans will have the gym at Montrose open from 1 to 5 p.m. every Sunday. Persons can call 319-470-7683 or 319-470-7684 to reserve a space and guarantee that a Trikke will be available to test ride from the 10 models in stock. Their Web site is: www.midwesttrikke.com.
