Neighborliness backfires for Keokuk residents

When a Keokuk couple left on vacation in June, they agreed their neighbors could have a yard sale at their home.
When the couple returned, they alleged some of their belongings were missing, possibly stolen or sold during the yard sale, according to Administrative Cpt. Dave Hinton of the Keokuk Police Department.
Christopher D. Smith, 33, formerly of Keokuk, now Smithville, Mo., was arrested Tuesday in Clay County, Mo., on a warrant for second-degree theft, a charge related to the Keokuk couple's claim, and for forgery in a separate matter.
Vanessa Cogswell, also of Smithville, has been under investigation regarding the yard sale incident.
The victims returned to their home in the 600 block of Morgan on June 29 and discovered items missing.
“The victims allege Smith and Cogswell either took or sold some of their belongings,” Hinton said.
Among the missing items were electronics, Precious Moments figurines and jewelry, he said.
Neighbors said they saw Smith and Cogswell, who allegedly had said they were moving to Kansas City, Mo., carrying the victims' suitcases away from their property, according to Hinton.
Smith's forgery charge is related to the deposit of a check into his bank account on June 17, he added.
Smith is being held at the Lee County Jail on $20,000 cash only bail.
Cogswell is not being held at the jail. Information about her whereabouts was not available this morning.
