Michael Girard won his fourth Hoerner YMCA Y-Athlon on Saturday with a time of 1:06.57. The women’s overall winner was Mindy Wallace with a time of 1:25.29.

A total of 58 athletes, some from as far away as Wisconsin, competed in the 2009 Y-Athlon. This year’s event was organized by out-going program director Ryan Duffie and interim program director Emilea Patterson.

The Hoerner Y-Athlon got its start in 2002, when Don Davis of Keokuk suggested a triathlon to the YMCA director as a possible fundraising event. Despite interference from the weather, the annual Y-Athlon has continued to grow, with a record number of participants this year.

Davis would like to see the numbers get even bigger.

“We have plenty of room for more competitors,” he said.

The Y-Athlon consists of a 350-yard swim in the Hoerner YMCA pool, a 14-mile bike ride along River Road and a 3.1-mile run through Rand Park and along Grand Ave.

Competitors begin the swim at 30-second intervals, and staff and volunteers keep track of individual starting times. The athletes continue at their own pace through all three phases of the event. Upon finishing the run, each athlete’s end time is recorded and the total time is calculated.

Girard, who usually competes in three or four triathlons a year, got into the sport in college after participating in cross-country, track and swimming in high school. The Keokuk event “is kind of a good warm-up for Burlington (Lake Geode Challenge),” he said.

This year, due to a brand new baby, Girard is limiting himself to the Hoerner Y-Athlon. He expressed gratitude to his wife April for taking his share of their parental duties the night before the race so that he could get adequate rest.

Only one youth team competed this year.

Bailey Hollis, 8, of Hamilton, Ill., completed the 150-yard youth swim. McKenzie Hall, 10, of Carthage, Ill., completed the 3-mile youth bike ride, and Morgan Groth, 9, of Carthage, completed the 1-mile youth run. Hollis and Hall ran for fun with Groth. The team time was 32:09.

Three adult teams competed. Dylan Morris, Scott Simon and Ryan Brunenn had a time of 1:15.24. Aliza Golan, Ron Scott and John Simmons had a time of 1:24.35, and Tara Campbell (swim and run) and Ehren Wills finished with a time of 1:54.02.
