Sludge spills Sunday at Highways 2 and 61

FORT MADISON –– A semi trailer carrying fresh water sludge from the Fort Madison water plant rolled onto its side at about 8:21 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Eric C. Gabel, Fort Madison, was westbound on Highway 61 attempting to turn onto Highway 2, but was going too fast to complete the turn, the report said.
The trailer rolled onto its driver’s side in the right turn lane of Highway 2 side spilling about 20,000 gallons of sludge.
Gabel refused treatment at the scene. The truck and trailer sustained major damage.
Lee County Emergency Management and Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded, as well as Montrose Fire and Rescue.
No citations were issued.
