Prairie Easter egg hunt (copy)

Kids scour the prairie at Lee County Conservation’s Heron Bend Conservation Center for Easter eggs Saturday afternoon.

Brightly-colored Easter eggs were scattered throughout sections of the prairie next to Lee County Conservation’s Heron Bend Conservation Center Saturday.

After children and their families explored the nature center and took a stroll down the story walk, it was time for the Easter egg hunt.

Separated into age groups, a long line of kids stood facing the prairie, trying to spot the eggs they wanted to get to first.

The first group of kids to search for the eggs was the youngest. The stubborn prairie grasses that were still upright stood taller than some of the children. Nonetheless, with some help, the kids surged forth, seeking the eggs and the treats therein.

Successive age groups did the same and once they had their prairie bounty, they emptied the eggs, took the goodies and re-joined the eggs and returned them to LCC to be used again.

Lee County Conservation Director Heather Huebner thanked the Three Rivers Conservation Foundation and Fort Madison High School students for their help with the event.
