HAMILTON, Ill. – A one-vehicle crash at 1:42 a.m. today on the Illinois entry to the Keokuk-Hamilton Bridge resulted in severe injuries to the driver.
Joel Frigillana, 45, had to be extricated from his 1999 Jeep Cherokee by the Hamilton Fire Department and was taken by ambulance to Keokuk Area Hospital.
Frigillana and his passenger, Jason T. Schisler, 33, are construction workers at the new Iowa State Penitentiary and have been staying in Hamilton. Both are from St. Louis, according to Hamilton Police Chief Robb Bell.Schisler refused medical attention.
According to the report, Frigillana was eastbound on the bridge driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle.
The jeep struck the guard rail and the railroad crossing pole.
Frigillana was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving too fast for conditions, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The crash is still under investigation.
Also assisting at the scene were the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Warsaw Ambulance Service, Carthage Ambulance Service and Keokuk Police Department.
