MONTROSE – The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported a Montrose woman unintentionally drove her vehicle over her 20-month-old daughter this morning, killing the child.
Sheriff's deputies and the Montrose Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a single vehicle and a child at 11:11 a.m. today, Sept. 28, near Montrose.
The investigation revealed Kayla D. James, 24, backed a vehicle from the driveway of her residence, located at 2480 270th St., #205A, in order to travel to a nearby dumpster.
Meyah James, age 20 months, was playing outside with a 5-year-old sibling. It is believed that Meyah James observed her mother's vehicle nearby and walked up to and behind the vehicle.
Kayla James reversed the vehicle to return to the residence, unwittingly backing over her daughter, Meyah, who died of injuries sustained in the accident.
Meyah James' body was transported to Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison. Kayla James was transported to Fort Madison Community Hospital.
Lee County EMS and the Lee County Medical Examiners, Dr. Eugenio Torres, assisted at the scene.
