CUBA, Ill. – Melvin O. McMillen, 89, formally of West Point, Ill., and Carthage, Ill., passed away at 9:57 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at the Clayberg Nursing Center in Cuba, Ill.

He was born on April 18, 1923, in Wythe Township, Ill., the son of Otto H. and Clara Vogel McMillen.

Melvin married Laurene Crear on Nov. 25, 1941, near Elvaston, Ill. She preceded him in death in July 1989.

Survivors include: a daughter, Karen (late Fred) Bowen of Hamilton, Ill.; three sons, Merle (Kelly) McMillen of Bettendorf, Randy (Susie) McMillen of Wee-Ma-Tuk, Cuba, Ill., and Dennis (Susan) McMillen of West Point, Ill.; a sister, Anna Mae (Charles) Miller of Quincy, Ill.; and 12 grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin; and four brothers, Everett, Eldon, Merlin and Edwin McMillen.

Melvin farmed in the Bowen and West Point area most of his life.

He served as a road commissioner after his retirement from farming.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lamporte - St.Clair Funeral Home in Hamilton.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established for the Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba or the Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton, Ill.
